The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Fraunhofer FHR in Wachtberg near Bonn is part of the large Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and one of the leading and largest European research institutes in the field of high-frequency physics and radar technology with one of the world's most powerful space observation radars.

For our "Integrated Circuits" team, we are permanently looking for students (max. 19.5 hours/week) to support our scientists and thus contribute to a successful research operation. You will play an active part in the team and our ongoing projects right from the start. If you want to fully contribute your commitment and knowledge, you can take on responsibility and new tasks early on and work on them independently - whether as a student assistant or while writing your thesis.

As part of our activities in the field of quantum electronics and satellite-based sensor technology, we offer a selection of student research projects/thesis as well as student assistant positions to support the quantum electronics team. The aim is to significantly advance quantum computing and sensing through projects such as "Module Quantum and Neuromorphic Computing" of the Research Fab Microelectronics (FMD-QNC) or the Center for Quantum Science and Engineering (CQSE). To this end, we are building semi-automated, cryogenic cycle measuring stations for a wafer prober, qubit control system and module measuring stations for a minimum temperature of up to 1 Kelvin (-269°C) in the field of quantum electronics.

What you will do

…in the field of quantum electronics

  • High-frequency measurement technology for cryogenic systems (working temperature down to 1 Kelvin (-269°C))
  • Circuit design for high-frequency components (working temperature down to 1 Kelvin (-269°C))
  • Implementations around a QuBit measuring station
  • Construction of cryogenic systems such as sample station or 1 Kelvin module measuring station
  • Automation of existing systems for control and cycle tests

…in the field of satellite-based sensor technology

  • High-frequency front-end developments and investigations (e.g. transmitters, receivers, phased array antennas)
  • Characterisation tasks and development of test procedures (e.g. using the cryogenic facilities)
  • Detailed investigations as part of a project task

Your tasks can be individually tailored to your strengths and interests based on current projects.

What you bring to the table

  • Current enrollment in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar studies
  • Initial experience or basic knowledge in the following areas are an advantage:
    • Vacuum technology and thermodynamics (cryogenics)
    • Fundamentals of high-frequency technology
    • Mechanical and high-frequency measurement technology
    • Control and automation technology

What you can expect

  • Interesting and practical tasks
  • Insights into current research projects from industry and basic research
  • Open and collegial working environment with informal interaction and modern equipment
  • Attractive conditions at one of the largest research organisations for application-oriented research in Europe
  • Excellent networking opportunities within the international research landscape

Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.
The position is initially limited for 6-12 months.
The weekly working time for student assistants is max. 19,5 hours.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
